It’s true. He’s the coolest dad I know. That’s saying a lot because I know tons of Dads!

I know it’s easy to get carried away saying nice things about the man whose sperm became you. But to give my papa credit, he deserves every word. He’s goofy as hell, good on stage, great at working the crowd (but is unbelievably shy, can you believe that?), and just recently, I learned he rocks impromptu speeches, too. Obviously, my grandma named him Achilles for a reason!  :P

At our clan reunion back in April, he and lolo both made everyone laugh. Lolo took to the stage like ducks do to water; Papa needed a lot of pushing and shoving. In the end, though, he spoke like a pro, holding his audience spellbound. I’m so proud of him; he made everyone laugh like mad. Hearing him talk, you’d never believe I had to plead, cajole, and finally wait for him to finish downing a glass of tuba (for courage, he said) just so he’d take the microphone.

My dad is a batang pantalan, a siga of Ma. Clara, the real McCoy, a Beatles and Bruce Lee fan boy, and the goofiest dad this side of the equator. He’s a whiz at chess (he’s won several chess tourneys; even made it to the Pambansang Palaro twice); he plays a mean game of pool (we don’t own pool tables for nothing!); and he can kick your butt at judo (yep, he used to do judo tourneys; today, he still wields nanchucks like ‘em shaolin masters in the movies do). And when he’s not busy annihilating someone at chess, pool, or judo, he turns into Bobby Flay and whips up dishes I have Wett call him up for recipes to. Oh, and my Dad is hot, too. I kid you not, he is!

Back in the day, he sent my teachers blushing. Three of them were such horrible flirts they kept me busy with “Ingna imong papa regards ko!” little messages, which they sent along with PTA letters. This year, my dad will turn 50… and I’m amused to report the female interest hasn’t waned. My 19-year-old sister has a 37-year-old classmate who plies her with chocolates and pretty trinkets and keeps visiting our house so she can giggle each time papa passes by. It’s atrocious, I tell you!  This classmate is married to an American octogenarian.

This here is my dad, all red and sweaty (this photo was taken at 4pm; he had been drinking with the boys since 10am). Wett took this photo while Papa was busy talking. I’m sure you can see the plain gold stud on his ear. What you can’t see is my mom’s name tattooed on his chest. What can I say? Romantiko si Bruce Lee!

This photo was taken at Villa Luisa, in Carmen, Bohol. You can’t miss my dad in this photo. He’s the one who looks like he should be drinking with John Regala, in a Robin Padilla flick.

Finally, here is my dad, mid-speech.

And here he is, singing with the other “boys”. He’s beside the guy in shorts.

Told you my dad is awesome to the nth degree! I’d say my dad is more awesome than yours… but it’s possible your Dad is Bruce Lee.   :P
